Head shape and ear position

Sometimes one ear looks further forward or higher than the other. This can be related to the shape of a baby’s head rather than the ear itself. It is a common question, and your pediatrician is the right first person to ask.

How head shape can affect ear position

Babies’ skulls are soft. If a baby often rests on one side, the back of the head can flatten on that side, and the ear on that side may appear to sit further forward. This is a positional change, and the ear itself may be a typical shape.

How it is assessed

Your pediatrician looks at your baby’s head from above and from the sides, checks neck movement, and asks about sleep and feeding positions. They may recommend repositioning, tummy time while awake, or a referral.

Who helps with head shape

Depending on what your pediatrician finds, families may be referred to a physical therapist, a craniofacial team or a specialist who evaluates head shape. EarWell Centers does not treat head shape.

Where ear molding fits

If your baby also has an ear shape difference, such as a fold or prominence, molding may be considered for the ear. An evaluation can separate what comes from the ear itself and what comes from head position.

Questions about head shape and ear position

Why does one of my baby’s ears look further forward?

Often because the head has flattened slightly on one side, which shifts how the ears line up. The ear itself may be typical.

How is head shape assessed?

Your pediatrician examines the head from several angles, checks neck movement and asks about positioning, then advises next steps.

Which specialists help with head shape?

Your pediatrician may refer you to a physical therapist, a craniofacial team or a head-shape specialist, depending on the findings.

Does ear molding change head shape?

No. Molding works on the outer ear. We can evaluate an ear shape difference, and your pediatrician can guide head-shape care.
