Treatment timeline
How long does ear molding take?
Treatment commonly lasts several weeks, with follow-up visits along the way. The exact length depends on your baby’s ear shape, age at the start, and how the ear responds. Your clinician will give you an estimate at the evaluation and update it as treatment progresses.

What affects treatment length
- The ear shape. Some shapes respond quickly; others, such as a constricted ear or mixed shape, may need more time.
- Age at the start. Softer newborn cartilage often responds more readily. Why timing matters.
- Skin and fit. If the skin needs a short rest, or the device needs refitting, the plan adjusts.
- One ear or both. Each ear is assessed on its own.
A typical course of treatment
- Evaluation and plan. The clinician examines both ears and explains the plan, the expected visits and what to watch for at home.
- Fitting. The device is fitted in the office. You receive written care instructions before you leave.
- Regular checks. You return for follow-up visits so the team can check the skin and shape and adjust or replace the device. Your team will tell you how often.
- Deciding when to stop. When the clinician judges the shape is holding, the device is removed.
- After treatment. You review the result with the clinician and discuss any later check-up.
If treatment is interrupted
Devices sometimes loosen, or the skin may need a break. Call 214-540-1428 the same day if the device comes off or loosens, and do not try to reapply it yourself. The team will advise whether to come in and how the timeline may change. Aftercare at home.
Planning visits around family life
Follow-up visits fit best when you plan them early. Many families keep the same office for every visit, but you can ask about seeing the team at another of our Dallas–Fort Worth offices if that works better.
Questions about the treatment timeline
How long will my baby wear the device?
Treatment commonly lasts several weeks, but the length depends on the ear shape, your baby’s age at the start and how the ear responds. The clinician will give you an estimate for your baby.
How often are follow-up visits?
Your care team sets the schedule based on your baby’s plan. Visits let the team check the skin, refit or adjust the device, and track progress.
What happens if treatment is interrupted?
Call 214-540-1428 if the device loosens or comes off, or if you notice skin changes. The team will decide whether to refit it and whether the timeline needs to change.
How do we know when treatment is finished?
The clinician decides when the ear shape is stable enough to stop, then removes the device and reviews the result with you.
Do both ears take the same amount of time?
Not always. Each ear is assessed separately, and one ear may finish before the other.
