Checklist

Newborn ear checklist

In the first days after birth, add your baby’s ears to the things you look at. Ear shape differences are common and are easy to miss. This checklist helps you notice what to mention to your pediatrician or our team.

How to look

Choose a calm moment in good daylight. Look at each ear from the side, then compare left and right. Take a photo of each ear from the same angle, and repeat in a few days so you can see whether anything is changing.

What to observe

  • The top of the ear: does it stand up in a smooth curve, or fold down or forward?
  • The upper edge: is it rounded, or does it look pointed or angled?
  • The rim: does the outer edge roll smoothly, or look flat, tight or kinked?
  • The inner folds: is there an extra ridge or fold inside the ear?
  • Position: does one ear stand out from the head more than the other?
  • The groove behind the ear: can you see where the top of the ear meets the head, or does it seem tucked under the skin?
  • Size and completeness: do both ears look fully formed and similar in size?

What to do next

  1. Note what you see. Keep your photos and dates together.
  2. Tell your pediatrician. Mention it at the newborn check, or call their office.
  3. Call us for an evaluation. You can call 214-540-1428 directly; you do not need to wait for a referral.

Avoid guessing from photos online

Many newborn ears look slightly unusual for a few days, and similar-looking ears can have different causes. Online images are useful for describing a concern, but they cannot tell you what your baby has or what will happen. A short exam can. If an ear looks smaller or incomplete, mention it to your pediatrician promptly, as a hearing check may be recommended. Hearing and ear development.

Questions about checking newborn ears

What should I look for in my newborn’s ears?

Look for a top that folds over, a pointed upper edge, a flat or tight rim, an extra fold, an ear that stands out, or an upper ear that seems tucked under the skin. Compare both ears.

Should I tell my pediatrician about my baby’s ear shape?

Yes. Mention anything you notice at the newborn check. Your pediatrician can examine the ears and refer you, and you can also call us directly.

What should I do if I notice something?

Take dated photos, tell your pediatrician and call 214-540-1428 for an evaluation. Earlier evaluation keeps more options open.

Can I tell what kind of ear shape my baby has from pictures online?

Not reliably. Similar-looking ears can differ, and some change in the first days. An exam is the best way to know.
