Ear molding results

These photographs show individual babies’ ears before and after molding. They are here to help you understand what treatment can involve, not to promise a particular result. Every baby’s ear, age and course of treatment is different.

Two babies’ ears photographed during molding, from the start of treatment to about five weeks. Previously published by EarWell Centers.

How to read these photos

  • One baby per photo. Each pair shows the same ear at the start of treatment and afterward.
  • Context matters. The ear shape, the baby’s age at the start and how treatment went all affect the result.
  • Not every ear responds the same way. Some ears improve fully, some partly, and some shapes respond less.
  • Where they come from. These photographs were previously published by EarWell Centers. The practice is confirming consent and case details for each image before launch.

Videos from Dr. Steve Byrd, MD

Short videos in which Dr. Byrd explains newborn ear shapes and molding. They were recorded in 2014 and 2018, so some practice details may have changed.

What affects results

  • The specific ear shape and whether more than one feature is present
  • How firm the cartilage is when treatment starts (timing)
  • Whether treatment is interrupted, for example by loosening or skin rest
  • Follow-through with visits and care at home (aftercare)

Are results permanent?

Molding aims for a lasting change by holding the ear while the cartilage firms. Published studies have followed treated babies and reported on how results held, and our clinicians will discuss what is known with you. Your child’s ears will keep growing, and the clinician may suggest a later check-up. Clinical evidence.

Questions about results

What affects the result of ear molding?

The ear shape, how firm the cartilage is when treatment starts, how treatment goes and care at home all play a part. The clinician will discuss realistic expectations for your baby.

Will my baby need follow-up after treatment?

The clinician will review the result when the device comes off and tell you whether a later check-up is recommended.

Where do these photographs come from?

They were previously published by EarWell Centers and show babies treated by the practice. Consent and case details are being confirmed for each image. They are never generated or edited to change the result.

Will my baby’s result look like these photos?

Not necessarily. Results vary between babies, and some ears improve partly rather than fully. These photos show what is possible, not a guarantee.

Do ear molding results last?

Molding aims for a lasting change as the cartilage firms in its new shape. Ask the clinician about what published follow-up studies report and what to watch for as your child grows.
